Dear Holt Soccer Parents,
We are so excited to have all 4 high schools participating in the 7h Annual Compete for a Cause soccer events scheduled for Saturday, September 22 at Okemos and the Compete for a Cause 5K scheduled for Saturday, September 15 in Mason. The goal of the events is to raise funds and awareness supporting the research and treatment of childhood cancer. Half of the money raised will remain local to assist children battling here at home and half will be donated to the St. Baldrick’s Foundation – an impressive national organization that is the largest (non-government) funder of childhood cancer research grants.
For those of you who have had the opportunity to participate in Compete for a Cause in years past, you know that it is an amazing night for the teams, parents and fans. We expect this year to be even better!
This year’s goal is to raise $60,000 for childhood cancer. It has been incredible to see what our donations funded last year. The MSU Pediatric Oncology Clinic was able to finish many projects to make the clinic more welcoming to kids receiving treatment. We also have been able to directly support families of several local children that are being treated at C.S. Mott in Ann Arbor and DeVoss in Grand Rapids.
In addition to supporting our local childhood cancer families, our donations to St. Baldrick’s have resulted in some amazing discoveries this past year. One of the most exciting highlights of this year was the FDA’s approval of Kymriah. Developed with help from St. Baldrick’s funding, this treatment is the first of its kind – a living drug – that helps the immune system attack only cancerous cells. 83% of patients receiving this therapy have gone into remission so far, and two-thirds remain in remission one year later. More kids will be cured because you supported this research.
For this year’s events to be successful, we are depending on the soccer parents from each school to volunteer and help this worthy cause. Please follow the links below to sign up for any of the volunteer opportunities:
